The best way to study for the ACT is to take one official timed baseline, sort every lost point by its real cause, practice the smallest weak skill you can name, and retest under time. Repeat that cycle weekly. Do not take full tests faster than you can learn from them.
Start with the test you are actually taking
The current Enhanced ACT is shorter than the old version. English, Math, and Reading form the Composite score; Science no longer enters the Composite. Science is optional for National testing, while state and district programs can decide whether to include it. Confirm the sections on your own registration before you build a schedule.

Math now gives you 45 questions in 50 minutes—about 67 seconds each on average—and four answer choices per question. ACT says roughly 80% of Math is “Preparing for Higher Math,” covering number and quantity, algebra, functions, geometry, and statistics and probability. About 20% is “Integrating Essential Skills,” while modeling appears throughout. Those labels are useful for reporting, but they are still too broad for a study session. “Algebra” is not a task. “I miss systems when one equation has to be rearranged first” is.
Give each ACT section a job in your schedule
Equal time sounds organized, but it ignores your baseline. A useful starting split is 50% of study time on the section with the most recoverable points, 30% on the next priority, and 20% maintaining your strongest section. Recalculate the split after each official checkpoint.
English: separate rule from purpose
Tag grammar and punctuation misses by the rule you lacked. Tag revision questions by the author's purpose or organization decision you misread.
Math: name the smallest skill
Move below broad labels. “Functions” becomes interpreting a transformed graph; “geometry” becomes angles formed by a circle's diameter.
Reading: make evidence findable
Record whether the miss came from the main claim, a detail, word meaning, structure, or comparing information. Then practice returning to proof in the passage.
Science: train the display, if you take it
Practice locating variables, trends, and disagreements in graphs, tables, and experimental descriptions. Do not study it as a pile of science facts.

Measure under real conditions
Take an official timed section with your permitted calculator, scratch paper, and no pauses. Record your answer and confidence before checking anything.

Audit every miss and every guess
A correct answer you could not reproduce is not mastered. Review the full solution, then name the exact point where your work broke.

Repair one narrow skill at a time
Do a short set of fresh questions on that skill. Explain the method without looking. Stop only when you can repeat it correctly, not when one answer turns green.

Mix it back into timed practice
A skill is not fixed until you can recognize it when the question is unlabeled and the clock is running. Use mixed sets to test that transfer.

Retest and compare causes
After a week, take another timed section. Compare error categories, not just scores. A smaller concept gap with the same scaled score is still progress.
Build an error log that tells you what to do next
Copying the question number and correct answer is not an error log. The useful part is the diagnosis. For each miss, write one sentence beginning with: “Next time, I will…” If you cannot finish that sentence, you have not reviewed the problem yet.

Do the same review for low-confidence correct answers. They are future misses hiding inside today's score.
Train pacing as a decision, not a stopwatch
The goal is not to rush every question. It is to stop one stubborn question from stealing three easier ones. A useful starting structure for a 50-minute Math section is:
Minutes 0–34: clean first pass
Solve what you know. Mark questions that need a new idea, not merely another line of algebra.
Minutes 34–45: return queue
Revisit marked problems from easiest to hardest. Do not automatically return in question order.
Minutes 45–50: verify
Confirm unanswered items, signs, units, and whether the question asked for x or an expression involving x.
After two sections: adjust
Your checkpoints should come from your work. If accuracy collapses when you speed up, buy time through fluency first.
This is a starting plan, not an ACT rule. Keep it only if your review shows that it protects accuracy.
A four-week ACT study plan you can repeat
Use five focused sessions per week. Most can be 40–50 minutes. Put the full timed work on a day when you can review it immediately or the next morning; an unreviewed practice test is mostly a very long score check.
Baseline and diagnosis
Take one official timed section. Build the error log. Spend the next three sessions on the two narrowest recurring gaps, then finish with a mixed timed set.
Repair the expensive gaps
Prioritize patterns that cost multiple questions: a repeated concept gap, a misreading habit, or slow algebra. Alternate targeted drills with short mixed sets.
Make the fixes survive the clock
Shift toward timed mixed work. Test your skip-and-return rule. End the week with another official section and compare the new error mix with Week 1.
Simulate and stabilize
Do one full official practice test under realistic conditions. Use the remaining sessions to repair only what the simulation exposed. Taper the day before the real test.
If your ACT is more than four weeks away
Repeat Weeks 2 and 3 with new weak skills before the final simulation week. Do not burn every official test early. Official material is best for measurement; fresh targeted practice is better for repetition.

Questions students ask before they start
How many hours a day should I study for the ACT?
Use the smallest schedule you can repeat with full attention. Forty focused minutes with review is better than two distracted hours of answering and moving on. The sample plan above is roughly three and a half to four and a half hours per week, including a timed section; change it around school, work, practice, and your test date.
Should I take a practice test every day?
No. A full test diagnoses; it does not automatically repair. If you keep measuring the same weakness without drilling it, you are practicing the result. One weekly official checkpoint is enough for many students during a four-week cycle.
What if my score is not moving?
Compare your error categories across tests. If the same skill repeats, narrow the drill further. If knowledge errors fall but pacing errors rise, your score may be temporarily hiding real improvement. If nothing changes, your review step—not your effort—is the first thing to inspect.
Can any study plan guarantee my score?
No honest free guide can guarantee a particular score. ACT scoring varies by form, and performance depends on your starting point, preparation, and test day. Treat practice score estimates as unofficial and track repeatable skills alongside the number.
