Study for the SAT in two layers: take official adaptive Bluebook tests to measure your level, then use your results to drill exact skills and error causes between tests. Practice the built-in calculator deliberately, work in timed modules, and retest only after you have repaired something measurable.
Know what “Digital SAT” changes
The Digital SAT has two sections: Reading and Writing, followed by Math after a 10-minute break. Each section is divided into two separately timed modules. The first module contains a broad mix of difficulty; your performance there helps determine whether the second module is more or less difficult. Module 1 is not a warm-up, and both modules contribute to your score.
College Board publishes the current timing, question counts, and adaptive structure on its SAT structure page. Its Math specifications also describe the four content domains.
SAT Math gives you 44 questions in 70 minutes, or about 95 seconds each on average. Its four domains are Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Roughly 70% of the section is split between Algebra and Advanced Math; the remaining questions are divided between the other two domains. That tells you where the test spends questions. It does not tell you which skill is holding your score down.
Build one plan for both SAT sections
A strong Math plan cannot rescue a Reading and Writing section you never review. After the baseline, assign time by repeated misses—not by which section feels more comfortable to practice.
Information and Ideas
Track main ideas, command of evidence, and inferences separately. A wrong inference needs proof-location practice, not a general reading worksheet.
Craft and Structure
Separate words-in-context, text structure, and cross-text connections so one broad domain label does not hide three different tasks.
Expression of Ideas + Conventions
For rhetorical revision, name the transition or purpose. For grammar, name the exact boundary, agreement, modifier, or form rule.
Math
Use both domain and cause. “Advanced Math + recognition” demands different practice from “Advanced Math + calculation.”

Your first move: one official Bluebook baseline
Take a full-length adaptive practice test in Bluebook before building a schedule. College Board's practice tests reproduce the two-stage adaptive model and provide scores, question review, and domain information in My Practice. For the baseline to mean anything, take it in one sitting, silence notifications, use only test-day tools, and do not look up a method mid-module.

Record the score and domain results
These establish the broad map. Do not treat a single domain bar as a complete diagnosis.

Review every miss and uncertain correct answer
College Board explicitly recommends reading the full explanation, including why other choices are wrong. Add any lucky or low-confidence answer to your review queue.

Name both the skill and the cause
“Advanced Math” is the domain. “I did not recognize that the vertex answered the question” is the cause you can train.

Choose the next seven days from the evidence
Put most of your time into the recurring causes, while keeping a small amount of mixed practice so strong skills stay available.
Do not manufacture an adaptive score from random questions
A raw accuracy percentage on a third-party set is not an official SAT score. Use official Bluebook practice for calibrated checkpoints. Use tools such as VECTOR for extra practice, worked explanations, and trend data between those checkpoints.
Turn your score report into a two-axis error map
Tag each reviewed question twice: once for content and once for cause. The combination is much more useful than either tag alone.

After 20–30 reviewed questions, count combinations. “Advanced Math + recognition” calls for a different study session than “Advanced Math + arithmetic.” That is the difference between a weakness label and a plan.
Practice a calculator decision, not just calculator tricks
A built-in Desmos calculator is available throughout SAT Math. That does not mean every question should start in Desmos. Calculator fluency includes knowing when not to open it.
Graph when the picture is the answer
Intersections, zeros, vertices, and the number of solutions can become visible faster than a long symbolic solve.
Use a table for repeated evaluation
When the problem compares several inputs or asks about a pattern, a table can reduce repeated arithmetic.
Stay by hand when structure is obvious
A one-step equation, a clean factorization, or a proportional relationship may be faster and safer on paper.
Write the relationship first
Desmos will solve the equation you type. It will not warn you that you modeled the words backward.
During review, solve calculator-eligible misses twice: once with a clean mathematical method and once with Desmos. Keep the route that is both faster and harder for you to break. College Board's own calculator guidance also notes that some questions are better solved without a calculator.
Train the two modules separately before chaining them
Each module gives you 35 minutes for 22 questions—about 95 seconds each on average. Average time is a budget, not a command. A practical starting routine is a 27-minute first pass followed by an 8-minute return and verification window.
- Flag a question when you do not have a credible setup, not merely because the algebra looks long.
- Protect time to revisit student-produced responses and make sure you entered the requested value.
- Practice Module 1 with the same concentration as Module 2; its routing role makes casual early errors especially unhelpful.
- Do not try to guess which route you received from how “hard” a question feels. Keep solving the test in front of you.
Once each 35-minute block is stable, chain two Math modules with no extra break. Then practice inside a full Bluebook test so Math arrives after Reading and Writing, as it does on test day.
A four-week Digital SAT plan
This schedule assumes five study sessions a week. The order matters more than the exact days: official measurement, targeted repair, mixed transfer, then another official measurement.
Take Bluebook, then build the map
Complete one official full-length test. Review it in My Practice. Tag Math misses by domain and cause, and choose the two combinations that recur most often.
Repair skills and calculator decisions
Run short, fresh sets on the selected skills. Add two Desmos sessions built around real problem setups, not disconnected button tricks. Finish with one timed 35-minute Math module.
Transfer into mixed modules
Move from labeled topic sets to mixed timed work. Chain two Math modules once. Review low-confidence correct answers alongside misses and update the error map.
Retest, close gaps, and taper
Take a second official Bluebook test under test-day conditions. Compare causes with Week 1. Spend the final sessions on the remaining repeat errors; avoid a heavy cram the day before.
Keep Reading and Writing inside the same cycle
Do not let Math consume every session just because progress feels easier to measure there. Use your Bluebook section scores and test date to divide time. Keep at least one full-length simulation late in the plan so you practice the complete 2-hour, 14-minute test experience.
Use official SAT questions first—and preserve them
College Board provides free full-length adaptive tests in Bluebook, official questions in the Student Question Bank, score review in My Practice, and official preparation through Khan Academy. Start there. Those resources are the authority on the live test.

Questions students ask before they start
How long should I study for the SAT?
Work backward from your test date and use the four-week cycle as a minimum complete loop, not a score promise. If you have more time, repeat the targeted and mixed-practice weeks before the final simulation. If you have less, keep the same order and reduce the number of drills—not the review.
How often should I take a Bluebook practice test?
Often enough to measure change, but not so often that testing replaces learning. In a four-week plan, a baseline and a final full test can be enough, with timed modules between them. Add another full test only if you have time to review it completely.
Should I memorize every Desmos trick?
No. Learn a small set of reliable uses—graphs, intersections, zeros, tables, and regressions—and practice recognizing when each one is appropriate. A trick you cannot connect to the problem's relationship is just another thing to forget.
Can a study plan guarantee a score increase?
No. Improvement depends on your starting point, the quality and consistency of your review, and test-day performance. Use official Bluebook scores for checkpoints and treat all third-party estimates, including VECTOR's, as unofficial.
